Since a bedroom is a place where a person spends one third of the day - eight hours - it should be properly planned, so that you can have a good night's sleep, in preparation for the next days work. The best direction for a master bedroom is southwest for the head of the family, since he/she should sleep well to carry the burden of the family on his or her shoulder during the day. This is also the reason for the water tank to be in this area so it keeps the room cooler. This was a practice from our ancestors when we had no fans, air coolers or air conditioners.

A bedroom on the northwest is good for children, girls and guests, not for the head of the family. It is seen that girls of marriageable age get married soon if they use this room. The south east is not at all a place for the bedroom; if by chance it is used, it creates quarrels among couples. North east is never recommended for the bedroom, if there is no choice, sanctity should be maintained at the northeast corner.

The position of the head towards the south gives sound sleep. When the head is towards the south, and the legs in the north direction, which is the Kubera (Lord of Wealth) direction, it is said that those persons will move towards or attain wealth.

The head towards the east is also okay, since the legs will be to the west, the direction of Lord Varuna (Lord of Water) who leads to prosperity quickly. The head towards the west is also acceptable, since one then faces the east when waking in the morning, which is the direction of Indra, where the person will be prosperous for the whole day.

It is not good to have the head to the north. Even scientifically it is proved that in long duration it affects the nervous system due to magnetic waves and repulsions and thus you can never have sound sleep which is very necessary for any person in this direction.
